HOW IT WORKS
The Sounder Sleep System is based on the discovery that certain small, slow, repeated physical movements can shift us from the active, waking state to one of profound physical and mental repose. When we reach that tranquil state, if we need sleep, we will fall asleep.
HOW IT WORKS - DETAILED EXPLANATION
The Sounder Sleep System exploits the two fundamental, opposing forces of the human nervous system, excitation and inhibition, to produce its sleep-inducing effects.
Excitation is the motive force behind all our actions, whether physical or mental. Excitation enables us to initiate, orient, and sustain all our actions.
But excitation cannot do its work without a finely calibrated constraining and regulating principle. That principle is inhibition. Inhibition modifies the speed, intensity, amplitude, scope, and duration of our actions to better match them to our intentions.
Working in a coordinated manner, excitation and inhibition provide shape, coherence, and orientation to all our actions. Simply stated, we need excitation to do things, but we need inhibition to do them right.
Aside from this essential role in the coordination of action, inhibition is an all-important factor when it comes to sleep. Falling asleep is a process in which the overall balance of excitation and inhibition in the brain (so-called "cortical excitability") is strongly shifted in favor of inhibition. As a result, cerebral processing slows down to a fraction of waking levels and billions of brain cells become "synchronized," meaning that they're all doing the same thing at the same time. As a result, cognitive activity is much reduced, metabolic activity slows, and the entire body becomes still. This is the natural process by which we fall asleep.
The core principle of the Sounder Sleep System is that we can initiate this inhibitory process, at will, by means of our own voluntary movements to achieve natural, restful sleep whenever we need it.
Every physical movement we do produces a mix of excitatory and inhibitory activity in the brain. Large, fast, powerful movements produce abundant excitation and relatively less inhibition, biasing the brain toward greater excitability. Small, slow, gentle movements, on the other hand, produce abundant inhibition, and relatively less excitation, biasing the brain toward decreased excitability, and sleep. (For those who are scientifically minded, a recent study of excitation and inhibition reveals the nuts and bolts of this effect.)
The Sounder Sleep System teaches you to unleash the inhibitory power of these small, slow, gentle movements. So you get all the natural, restful sleep you need, when you need it. So you'll sleep better, feel better, and enjoy life more.
ORIGINS OF THE SYSTEM
The Sounder Sleep System is based on a lifetime of study, experience, and observation by the system's founder, Michael Krugman. While original in its conception and implementation, it is inspired and informed by contemporary neuroscience and sleep research and utilizes time-tested principles common to all self-healing systems, both ancient and modern, including yoga, qigong, several meditation modalities, and the teachings of Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais. The system has been proven effective by thousands of Sounder Sleep students in clinics, schools, and hospitals worldwide. There are currently over 200 teachers of the system in twelve countries.
A TWO PRONGED APPROACH
In practice, the Sounder Sleep System employs a two-pronged approach. By day, unique self-healing techniques called DayTamers™ effectively combat stress, tension, and anxiety to make life more peaceful. When your life is more peaceful, your sleep is more peaceful. By night, tiny, sleep-inducing movements that you do right in your own bed, called Mini-Moves, hasten the onset of slumber and ensure quick recovery from unwanted awakenings during the night.
The daytime and nighttime Sounder Sleep techniques work together to reduce the stress of life and ensure you get all the natural, restful sleep you need. The movements are so gentle, even your partner won’t know you’re doing them. You will enjoy making these easy, pleasurable exercises part of your daily and nightly life.
Sounder Sleep and Sounder Sleep System are Registered Trademarks of Michael Krugman
